An investment event people don’t want to miss

A lot of exiting things are brewing in life science-Umeå, and it shows! The interest for Biotech Umeå Investment Day 2016 among investors and industrial partners were greater than ever before.

Thanks to the University and the University Hospital, Umeå is rich in creative brain power, and there are many cool ideas and concepts, but in order to make the concepts fly they need, capital, connections and competence. Biotech Umeå Investment Day is a unique opportunity for companies, investors and partners to meet and build relationships, to create good business opportunities for both investors and companies. The numbers speak for themselves, with 95% of the national and international investors most definitely intending to come back next year

Focus on partnering

This year, the focus on partnering was even stronger than previous years, as 13 companies and 29 investors or industrial partners headed towards Grand Hôtel in Stockholm and the 78 pre-booked partnering meetings. Though central to the event, they are not everything, and partnering sessions were mixed with short presentations and in the pipeline pitches.  Also the tight and familiar atmosphere offer very good mingle opportunities for companies, investors and the knowledgeable partners; APL, Lindahls, Zacco and Connect.

Preparations that pay off

For the companies the investment day and the partnering sessions are the fruit of a lot of work and preparations supported by Biotech Umeå, and the co-organizers Umeå Biotech Incubator and Uminova Innovation. The responses from investors show that this is hard-work that pays off. And for the companies these preparations also come in handy for other partnering events. .

It is happening in Umeå

Judging by the general buzz and the post-event survey, the investors were very impressed with the regions life sciences companies, and their mini-prospects (A4), and filmed pitches.

- It is in Umeå that things are happening, as one investor put it.

The well-prepared pitches (during partnering), presented in no hurry, was what another investor especially wanted to highlight that he/she was impressed with.

Investments and partnerships are long-term commitments and processes. On average the investors and industrial partners attending Biotech Umeå Investment Day met 3-4 companies that they want to build relationships with. It will be interesting to follow how these contacts develop.

A pitch that went straight to the heart, winner of the pitch competition

The partnering and in the pipeline companies attending Biotech Umeå Investment Day represent pharma, MedTech or other life science sectors. Some companies and concepts appeal to a broader range of investor, and some to a more specialized group, either way the pitch is often the first selection point. One company that obviously appeals many was Lipigon Pharmaceuticals. Their pitch, on developing drugs to treat cardiovascular disease, was selected, by a jury of investors, as the winner of Connect Sweden’s pitch competition. The companies Likvor and Inficure Bio were first and second runner ups. Congratulations to all three of you.

Keep your calendars open for next year.
